Starting your first internship can be an exciting yet daunting experience for many students. At Columbia College Chicago, students can feel confident knowing they are well-prepared for this significant step in their career journey. Sophomore-level students become eligible for internships equipped with a variety of skills, professionalism, and a strong desire to learn and grow during their semester. A perfect example is senior Audio major Qara Barner, who is currently embracing her first internship at a music studio and enjoying every moment of it.

Originally from the south side of Chicago and a graduate of Gwendolyn Brooks College Preparatory Academy, Qara chose Columbia College Chicago for several reasons. “While researching audio programs at different schools, I found that Columbia’s coursework and equipment best suited my goals for an audio education. Additionally, Columbia is close to home, and I loved the idea of attending an arts-focused school where I could connect with creative peers from diverse backgrounds. Being around fellow artists has always inspired me to be more creative!”

Qara attributes her success at her internship to the support of her family and the foundational knowledge she gained through courses such as Music Recording I, Signal Flow, and Intro to Audio. She also credits Columbia’s hands-on approach and the variety of specialized classes in her major for enriching her learning experience. “What I’ve enjoyed most is the learning process. I love that at Columbia, we don’t have to complete all our general education requirements before diving into our major. I’ve gained so much knowledge about audio and the music business through these courses.”

For students embarking on their first internship, Qara offers this advice: “My internship at Rax Trax has reaffirmed that becoming a music recording engineer is the right path for me. Learning has been so enjoyable. Don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Take full advantage of the opportunities and equipment available to you! Learn as much as you can and build lasting connections.”
